Understanding Your Options
Types of Dialysis Access
There are three primary types of dialysis access, each suited to different patient needs. Your Aria Vascular specialist will help determine the best option based on your anatomy, health status, and dialysis schedule.
Types of Dialysis Access
Created by surgically connecting an artery directly to a vein — most often in the forearm or upper arm. Fistulas develop into strong, high-flow vessels ideal for repeated needle access. They offer the longest lifespan and lowest infection risk of any access type, making them the preferred option whenever possible.
AV Graft
When a patient’s veins are not suitable for fistula creation, an AV graft uses a synthetic tube to connect an artery and a vein. Grafts can typically be used for dialysis sooner after placement than fistulas and are a reliable long-term access solution for many patients.
Dialysis Catheter
Tunneled dialysis catheters are placed directly into a large vein in the neck or chest and are used when immediate dialysis access is needed. While catheters carry higher long-term infection risk, they are essential for urgent situations and for patients awaiting fistula or graft maturation.

We understand that dialysis patients are already managing complex schedules and health demands. Our goal is to make every visit as efficient and stress-free as possible.
Initial Consultation
Your first visit includes a thorough review of your dialysis history, current access status, and vascular anatomy. We use ultrasound mapping to identify the best vessels for access creation or evaluate an existing access point.
Your Procedure
Most dialysis access procedures at Aria Vascular are performed on an outpatient basis — you return home the same day. We use local anesthesia with sedation for comfort. Fistula creation typically takes 1–2 hours; catheter placements and fistulagrams are often completed in under an hour.
Follow-Up & Monitoring
We provide structured follow-up to monitor access maturation and function, and coordinate with your dialysis center for ongoing surveillance. Our team responds quickly if access problems arise between scheduled appointments.

Common Questions
Dialysis Access FAQs
How long does it take for an AV fistula to mature?
Most AV fistulas require 6–8 weeks to mature before they can be used for dialysis. In some cases maturation may take longer. Your Aria Vascular surgeon will monitor your fistula and coordinate with your dialysis team to determine when it is ready for use.
What happens if my fistula stops working?
Fistula failure is most often caused by a clot or a narrowing in the vessel. Our interventional team can perform a fistulagram and declot procedure — often same-week — to restore access function and get you back on your dialysis schedule quickly.
Do I need a referral to see Aria Vascular for dialysis access?
Many patients come to us through their nephrologist or dialysis center. However, self-referrals are also welcome. Contact our office at (209) 226-4300 and our team will coordinate with your care team to ensure a smooth transition.
Does Aria Vascular work with my dialysis center?
Yes. We partner with dialysis centers across the Central Valley. If your center is not yet connected with us, we are happy to establish a referral relationship. Call (209) 226-4300 to speak with our team.
