Understanding the Condition

Types of Aneurysms We Treat

Aneurysms are abnormal bulgings in the wall of a blood vessel caused by progressive weakening. As an aneurysm grows, the vessel wall becomes thinner and more vulnerable to rupture — a medical emergency with up to 80% mortality. Aria Vascular treats all major aneurysm types.

Most Common

Aortic Aneurysm (AAA / TAA)

Bulging in the body’s largest blood vessel — the aorta. Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) occur below the diaphragm; thoracic aneurysms (TAA) occur in the chest. AAA affects ~1.5 million Americans and is the 13th leading cause of U.S. death.

Urgent

Aortic Dissection

A tear in the inner aortic wall allowing blood to surge between layers, creating a false channel. Dissection can compromise blood flow to vital organs and is a surgical emergency. Aria Vascular provides emergent evaluation and treatment coordination.

Post-EVAR Complication

Aortic Endoleak

Blood continuing to flow into the aneurysm sac following endovascular repair (EVAR). Endoleaks can cause aneurysm growth and rupture if untreated. We provide comprehensive post-EVAR surveillance and minimally invasive endoleak repair.

Less Common

Visceral Aneurysm

Aneurysms in arteries supplying abdominal organs — including splenic, renal, hepatic, and mesenteric arteries. Though less common, visceral aneurysms carry significant rupture risk and require careful management. Treated with endovascular embolization or stent placement.

Prevention & Early Detection

Who Is at Risk? Screening Saves Lives.

Aneurysms often develop silently for years with no symptoms until rupture. Understanding your risk factors is critical for early detection.

Age over 65
Male sex (4–6× higher AAA risk)
History of smoking
High blood pressure
High cholesterol / atherosclerosis
Family history of aneurysm
Peripheral arterial disease
Connective tissue disorders

🔍 AAA Screening Recommendation

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a one-time ultrasound screening for AAA in all men aged 65–75 who have ever smoked. If you have risk factors and have not been screened, call Aria Vascular at (209) 226-4300 to schedule a non-invasive evaluation.

How We Evaluate

How Are Aneurysms Diagnosed at Aria Vascular?

Most aneurysms are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. When an aneurysm is found or suspected, our team conducts a thorough evaluation to assess size, morphology, growth rate, and rupture risk.

Abdominal Ultrasound

Non-invasive, radiation-free, and the standard first-line screening tool for AAA. Can be performed quickly in our office with accurate size measurements.

CT Angiography (CTA)

Gold standard for surgical planning. Provides detailed 3D imaging of the aorta, exact aneurysm dimensions, and vessel anatomy for treatment planning.

MR Angiography (MRA)

High-quality vascular imaging without X-rays. Used for patients who cannot receive contrast dye and for follow-up surveillance imaging.

Ongoing Surveillance

For small aneurysms not yet requiring repair, regular imaging surveillance monitors growth and determines optimal intervention timing. We coordinate your surveillance schedule.

Treatment Options

Aneurysm Treatment Options at Aria Vascular

The right treatment depends on aneurysm size, location, growth rate, symptoms, and overall health. Aria Vascular offers the full spectrum — from watchful waiting to the most advanced surgical and endovascular repair.

Small Aneurysms
Watchful Waiting & Medical Management

For aneurysms below 5.5 cm, careful surveillance and medical management are recommended. This includes blood pressure control, smoking cessation, statin therapy, and regular imaging. Our team monitors your aneurysm and recommends intervention when appropriate thresholds are met.

Minimally Invasive — AAA
Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)

The minimally invasive standard of care for abdominal aortic aneurysm in suitable patients. Our vascular surgeons insert a stent-graft through small groin incisions and guide it into position inside the aorta to exclude the aneurysm from blood flow. No large abdominal incision — most patients are discharged in 1–2 days with a 2–4 week recovery.

Minimally Invasive — Thoracic
Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)

The endovascular equivalent of EVAR for thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. A stent-graft is deployed through arterial access in the groin — avoiding the need for open chest surgery. TEVAR significantly reduces operative mortality and recovery time compared to open thoracic repair.

When Needed
Open Surgical Repair

For patients with anatomy not suitable for endovascular repair, or in emergency rupture situations, open surgical repair remains a durable and essential option. Our board-certified vascular surgeons are highly experienced in both open abdominal and thoracic aortic repair, ensuring every patient has access to every option.

Post-EVAR Care
Endoleak Repair

For patients who develop an endoleak following prior EVAR, Aria Vascular provides comprehensive evaluation and minimally invasive repair using coil embolization, additional stent-graft deployment, or other image-guided techniques depending on the endoleak type.

Splenic, Renal & More
Visceral Aneurysm Treatment

Visceral aneurysms are treated with endovascular embolization or covered stent placement through a catheter — no open surgery required. Our interventional team has expertise in splenic, renal, hepatic, and mesenteric artery aneurysm repair.

Your Care Journey

What to Expect at Aria Vascular

We understand that dialysis patients are already managing complex schedules and health demands. Our goal is to make every visit as efficient and stress-free as possible.

Initial Evaluation

A thorough review of your medical history, risk factors, and prior imaging. We order appropriate imaging — typically abdominal ultrasound or CTA — to accurately measure the aneurysm. Your surgeon reviews all findings in plain language and presents treatment options with clear risks and benefits.

Surgical Planning

Detailed anatomical analysis determines whether EVAR, TEVAR, or open repair is safest and most durable for your anatomy. We coordinate pre-operative cardiac and pulmonary evaluations as needed to optimize your readiness for surgery.

Procedure & Recovery

EVAR and TEVAR patients are typically discharged in 1–2 days and return to normal activities in 2–4 weeks. Open repair patients stay 4–7 days with a 6–12 week recovery. Our team provides detailed post-operative instructions throughout.

Long-Term Surveillance

EVAR and TEVAR patients require lifelong imaging surveillance — typically at 1 month, 6 months, then annually — to detect endoleak or sac changes. Aria Vascular coordinates this surveillance and intervenes promptly when needed.

Common Questions

Aneurysm FAQs

What size aortic aneurysm requires surgery?

Surgery is generally recommended when AAA reaches 5.5 cm or greater, or grows more than 0.5 cm in 6 months. For thoracic aneurysms, the threshold is typically 5.5–6.0 cm depending on location and cause. Your Aria Vascular surgeon will evaluate your specific case and recommend intervention at the right time.

No. Aortic aneurysms do not resolve on their own and typically grow over time. For smaller aneurysms, careful surveillance and risk factor management can slow growth and delay the need for intervention — but the aneurysm must be monitored regularly by a vascular specialist.

Symptoms include sudden, severe abdominal or back pain — often described as tearing or ripping — along with dizziness, rapid heart rate, and possible loss of consciousness. A ruptured aortic aneurysm is a life-threatening emergency. Call 911 immediately — do not drive yourself to the hospital.

Each has advantages depending on anatomy, age, and health. EVAR carries lower short-term risk and faster recovery, making it preferable for many patients. Open surgery offers greater long-term durability and is preferred for complex anatomy. Aria Vascular offers both, and your surgeon will recommend the best approach for your situation.

An endoleak occurs when blood continues to flow into the aneurysm sac after EVAR, potentially causing continued growth and rupture risk. Endoleaks are detected through regular post-operative CT surveillance and classified by type. Some resolve on their own; others require additional treatment. Aria Vascular provides comprehensive endoleak evaluation and repair.

Yes. We accept Medicare and most major insurance plans. Aneurysm evaluation and treatment — including EVAR, TEVAR, and open repair — are covered procedures for qualifying patients. Call (209) 226-4300 to verify your specific coverage prior to your appointment.
