Comprehensive vein care — varicose veins, chronic DVT, post-thrombotic syndrome, and IVC filter services — delivered by vascular specialists in the Central Valley.

Overview

Comprehensive Venous Care — From Spider Veins to Serious Vascular Disease

Venous disease affects millions of Americans — from uncomfortable varicose veins to life-threatening deep vein thrombosis — and the Central Valley is no exception. At Aria Vascular, our board-certified vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists specialize in the full spectrum of venous disease, offering minimally invasive treatments that address the root cause of vein problems and deliver lasting results.

As the only comprehensive, multidisciplinary vascular center in San Joaquin County, we provide Central Valley patients with the full range of venous care — all under one roof, without traveling to Sacramento or the Bay Area.

30%+

of adults are affected by varicose veins — far more than a cosmetic concern

50%

of DVT patients develop post-thrombotic syndrome — a chronic, treatable condition

95%+

vein closure rate with EVLA/RFA — the minimally invasive standard of care

⚠ Sudden Leg Pain or Swelling?

Sudden calf pain, redness, warmth, or swelling — especially after travel or surgery — may be signs of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Call Aria Vascular at (209) 226-4300 for prompt evaluation. If you experience sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, call 911 immediately — this may indicate a pulmonary embolism.

Conditions We Treat

Venous Conditions We Treat at Aria Vascular

Aria Vascular provides comprehensive care for the full spectrum of venous disease — from mild cosmetic vein concerns to medically significant chronic venous conditions.

Varicose Veins & Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Affects 30%+ of adults — more than cosmetic

Enlarged, twisted veins caused by failing vein valves that allow blood to pool in the legs. Varicose veins are a sign of underlying venous insufficiency that worsens over time without treatment — progressing from visible veins to painful ulcers in severe cases.

Chronic DVT / Post-Thrombotic Syndrome

Affects up to 50% of DVT survivors

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can cause lasting damage to vein valves, leading to post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) — a chronic condition causing pain, swelling, and skin changes months to years after the original clot. Advanced endovascular treatment can significantly improve PTS symptoms.

IVC Filter Placement & Removal

Pulmonary embolism prevention & filter retrieval

IVC filters protect against pulmonary embolism in patients with DVT who cannot receive blood thinners, or during high-risk periods. Retrievable filters should be removed promptly once the risk has resolved — long-term filter retention is associated with increased complication risk. Aria Vascular provides both placement and proactive retrieval services.

Our Procedures

Venous Disease Treatments at Aria Vascular

Gold Standard

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

PAE is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that reduces prostate size and relieves BPH symptoms without surgery. Performed through a small catheter inserted at the wrist or groin, PAE blocks blood supply to the prostate — causing it to shrink and reducing pressure on the urethra.

Alternative to EVLA

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Uses controlled radiofrequency energy rather than laser to heat and seal diseased veins — with equally excellent outcomes. RFA is often associated with slightly less post-procedure bruising and is preferred in certain anatomical situations. Your Aria Vascular specialist recommends the best approach based on your ultrasound findings and vein anatomy.

Spider & Small Varicose Veins

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

A chemical solution injected directly into abnormal veins causes them to scar, collapse, and fade. Ultrasound guidance ensures precise delivery for deeper veins that cannot be seen on the skin surface. An effective, office-based procedure with no downtime. Multiple sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart achieve optimal results for spider veins and small varicosities.

Surface Varicose Veins

Microphlebectomy (Ambulatory Phlebectomy)

For larger surface varicose veins not fully addressed by ablation, microphlebectomy removes bulging vein segments through tiny puncture-sized incisions — leaving virtually no scarring under local anesthesia. Patients resume normal activity in 1–2 days. Often performed in the same session as EVLA or RFA for comprehensive vein treatment.

Chronic DVT / PTS

Venoplasty & Stenting for Iliac Vein Obstruction

For patients with chronic iliac vein obstruction contributing to post-thrombotic syndrome — minimally invasive venoplasty and stenting through a small catheter entry point can restore blood flow through the blocked vein segment. Studies show significant reduction in PTS symptoms in appropriately selected patients. Our team evaluates each case individually to determine candidacy.

PE Prevention

IVC Filter Placement & Removal

Placed and removed under fluoroscopic image guidance for maximum safety and precision. Placement is an outpatient procedure taking 30–45 minutes. Filter retrieval should be performed as soon as the indication resolves — our team monitors filter patients proactively and schedules timely retrieval to minimize long-term complication risk. If you have an existing IVC filter and have not been evaluated for removal, call us at (209) 226-4300.

EVLA / RFA vs. Surgical Vein Stripping

Surgical vein stripping — once the standard treatment for varicose veins — has been largely replaced by minimally invasive ablation techniques that offer comparable long-term outcomes with significantly less pain and recovery.

Your Care Journey

What to Expect at Aria Vascular

Consultation & Ultrasound Mapping

A thorough review of your symptoms, medical history, and risk factors, followed by duplex ultrasound to map your leg vein anatomy — identifying which veins are affected by reflux or obstruction. Your specialist reviews findings with you and recommends the most appropriate treatment approach.

Your Procedure

Most venous procedures are outpatient under local anesthesia — you go home the same day. EVLA and RFA take 45–60 minutes per leg. Sclerotherapy takes 20–30 minutes. IVC filter placement and removal each take 30–45 minutes. We ask you to wear compression stockings and walk immediately after ablation procedures.

Recovery & Follow-Up Ultrasound

Most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days after ablation. Some bruising and mild tenderness is normal and resolves within 1–2 weeks. A follow-up duplex ultrasound at 1–4 weeks confirms vein closure and treatment success. Sclerotherapy patients typically need 2–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Common Questions

Venous Disease FAQs

Are varicose veins just a cosmetic problem?

No. Varicose veins are a sign of underlying venous insufficiency — a medical condition that can worsen over time and lead to leg pain, swelling, skin damage, and venous ulcers if untreated. Most insurance plans cover varicose vein treatment when symptoms are present. A vascular evaluation at Aria Vascular can determine whether treatment is medically indicated.

Both EVLA and RFA use heat to seal diseased veins under ultrasound guidance — EVLA uses laser energy, RFA uses radiofrequency energy. Both have excellent 95%+ long-term closure rates. RFA is often associated with slightly less post-procedure bruising. Your Aria Vascular specialist will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your vein anatomy and ultrasound findings.

Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a chronic complication affecting up to 50% of DVT patients, caused by valve damage from the original clot. It causes chronic leg pain, swelling, and skin changes. For patients with iliac vein obstruction contributing to PTS, minimally invasive venoplasty and stenting can significantly improve symptoms. Aria Vascular evaluates all PTS patients for endovascular treatment candidacy.

Retrievable IVC filters should be removed as soon as the indication for placement has resolved — guidelines recommend retrieval within 3–6 months of placement when possible. Filters left in long-term are associated with increased risk of filter fracture, migration, and thrombosis. If you have an existing IVC filter and have not been evaluated for retrieval, call Aria Vascular at (209) 226-4300.

Most major insurance plans including Medicare cover varicose vein treatment when the patient has symptomatic venous insufficiency confirmed by duplex ultrasound. Coverage typically requires documentation of symptoms and may require a trial of compression stockings. Our team handles insurance verification and prior authorization before every procedure.

Venous leg swelling typically worsens throughout the day with prolonged standing and improves with leg elevation — often accompanied by varicose veins, skin discoloration, or a history of DVT. Sudden calf pain, warmth, or swelling may indicate acute DVT and should be evaluated promptly. Call Aria Vascular at (209) 226-4300 to schedule a vein evaluation.
