Overview
Advanced Cancer Treatment. Close to Home.
“Cancer treatment is evolving — and for many patients, minimally invasive, image-guided procedures now offer powerful alternatives to or complements of traditional surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Central Valley patients no longer need to travel for this level of care.”
At Aria Vascular, our board-certified interventional radiologists specialize in interventional oncology: a rapidly advancing field that uses precision imaging to deliver cancer-fighting treatments directly to tumors — with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue and a dramatically faster recovery than open surgery.
As the only comprehensive, multidisciplinary vascular center in San Joaquin County, we bring these advanced treatments to Stockton — so patients can focus on healing, not commuting.

Understanding the Field
What Is Interventional Oncology?
Interventional oncology (IO) is a subspecialty of interventional radiology that uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat cancer. IO procedures are performed through small incisions using real-time imaging — X-ray, CT, or ultrasound — to guide catheters, needles, and specialized devices precisely to the tumor site.
Unlike traditional surgery, IO procedures are typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation, involve minimal blood loss, and allow patients to return home the same day or after a short stay. IO treatments can be used as a primary cancer therapy, as a bridge to surgery or transplant, or to manage symptoms and extend quality of life.

Y90 Radioembolization (SIRT)
Y90 radioembolization — also known as Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) — is an advanced minimally invasive treatment for primary liver cancer (HCC) and liver metastases. Millions of microscopic radioactive beads (yttrium-90) are injected directly into the hepatic artery feeding the tumor, lodging in the tumor’s blood vessels and delivering a targeted, high-dose of radiation from the inside — with minimal exposure to surrounding healthy liver tissue.
Performed in a single treatment session under sedation. Most patients go home the same day. Y90 may be used to treat unresectable tumors, downsize tumors before surgery or transplant, control tumor progression, and manage symptoms.
- Unresectable liver tumors
- Downsizing before resection
- Bridge to liver transplant
- HCC & colorectal metastases
Tumor Embolization (TACE / Bland Embolization)
Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and bland embolization are catheter-based procedures that cut off the blood supply feeding a tumor — causing it to shrink and die. In TACE, chemotherapy is delivered directly to the tumor through the catheter before the artery is blocked, combining local chemotherapy with ischemia for enhanced tumor kill.
Used for liver tumors, kidney tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, and other hypervascular cancers. Can also reduce tumor bleeding prior to surgery or provide palliative symptom management.
Cryoablation
Cryoablation uses extreme cold to destroy cancer cells. Under CT or ultrasound guidance, a thin cryoprobe is inserted directly into the tumor through a tiny skin puncture and delivers argon gas that rapidly freezes the tumor to temperatures as low as -160°C — forming an ice ball that destroys cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Particularly well-suited for kidney tumors, lung tumors, liver tumors, bone metastases, and soft tissue tumors — especially for patients who are not surgical candidates or whose tumor location makes open surgery high-risk. Most patients go home the same day or after one night.
Port Placement & Removal
An implanted port (port-a-cath / mediport) is placed under the chest skin to provide reliable, long-term venous access for chemotherapy, blood draws, and IV medications — eliminating repeated needle sticks and protecting peripheral veins from the damaging effects of chemotherapy agents.
Placed and removed by our interventional radiologists using image guidance for maximum safety and precision. Performed under local anesthesia — procedure takes 30–45 minutes, and most patients go home within an hour. The port is typically usable within 24 hours.
- Repeat IV chemotherapy cycles
- Difficult peripheral venous access
- Long-term IV antibiotics / TPN
- Frequent blood draws
Know Your Options
Interventional Oncology vs. Traditional Approaches
IO procedures do not replace all traditional cancer treatments — but for many patients they offer significant advantages, particularly when used alongside or instead of open surgery.
| Factor | Interventional Oncology | Open Surgery / Systemic Therapy |
|---|---|---|
| Access Method | Tiny needle or catheter entry | Large surgical incision |
| Anesthesia | Local + sedation | General anesthesia |
| Hospital Stay | Same-day or 1 night ✓ | Days to weeks |
| Recovery | Days ✓ | Weeks to months |
| Tumor Targeting | Image-guided precision delivery | Systemic therapy affects whole body |
| Suitable for Inoperable Tumors | Often yes ✓ | Requires surgical candidacy |
| Can Combine with Other Tx | Yes — bridge or adjunct | Yes |
| Systemic Side Effects | Significantly lower ✓ | Higher with chemo/radiation |

Your Care Journey
What to Expect at Aria Vascular
Initial Consultation
A thorough review of your cancer diagnosis, treatment history, imaging, and medications. We discuss all IO options relevant to your cancer type, explain benefits and risks in plain language, and determine the best integration with your overall treatment plan.
Procedure Day
Most IO procedures are outpatient under local anesthesia with light sedation. Port placement takes 30–45 minutes. Cryoablation takes 1–2 hours. Y90 requires a two-visit protocol — a mapping angiogram followed by the treatment session 1–2 weeks later. You are monitored throughout by our clinical team.
Recovery & Imaging Follow-Up
Most patients go home the same day or after one night. Y90 patients commonly experience mild post-embolization syndrome (fatigue, low-grade fever, mild nausea) for 1–2 weeks — a normal treatment response managed with medication. Follow-up CT or MRI at 4–6 weeks assesses tumor response.
